Get well well

Subjected to boredom, brains tend to generate random thoughts. Here's one from me and one from my better half (you can try to guess which is which).

1) In most languages you say "Get well soon", but in German you say "Gute Besserung", to wish that Besserung (the process of getting well) is not quick but... good. So literally this means "Get well well". Why would the Germans say that? How can the Besserung not be gut?

2) If Big Bang Theory had a porn parody (link NSFW obviously), what would it be called? It cannot be called Big Bang Theory because the original series is already called that. Big BANG Theory?

  1. I believe that in this case "Gute" is used in a way of saying "going well". Like in "gutes Gelingen" (something like "I wish you that things turn out well").
The idea is that you imply that the person will get better and that you wish for them that his process goes well (regardless whether going well is defined as rapid or hassle/pain free).

    1. I also thought that it's thoughtful for example if your boss says "get well well", and not "get well quickly", which might carry the implication "so that you can get back to work asap".

  2. 1) Maybe if one considers the broader medieval meaning of 'gut' (or 'guot' then) which includes meanings like 'helpful', 'efficient' and 'convenient', this makes more sense. And some of this meanings can still be connotated with 'gut', depending on the individual use.

    2) How about The Big Dang Theory or The Big Bang Practice? (Who wants theory in porn anyway?)

And I'd guess the second thought is Marja's.

    1. You guessed wrong! In this case I was speculating on German wishes and hubs was making bad jokes about TV-series.

  3. From a foam fighting group:

A fighter is sick and a fellow fighter comes to see him, handing him a card.

The sick fighter reads the card and goes "Thank you, but don't you mean 'get well soon' instead of 'get good soon'?"

"No, it means you suck and need to practice more!"
